My Brushes with Celebrity

I've been thinking about doing this as a post for a while now, and finally have decided to do it (seeing as how I have to be up in 6 hours for a dentist appointment, it's the perfect time).

I've only gotten autographs from three people:

Celebritus Proximitus:
  • Mel Torme (The Velvet Fog) He was leading the Beverly Hills HS Choir in singing a Christmas song for the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce's Christmas Pageant. I was acting as a chaperone for the students on their walk from the HS auditorium to Rodeo Drive where they performed.
  • Whoopi Goldberg She was co-hosting the BH thing mentioned above.
  • Dudley Moore Came into the Pizza Hut my brother and I were eating at in Santa Monica one night. Had a half-dozen kids with him. We left him alone.
  • 2 Live Crew Came into the Kinko's I worked at one evening and made self-serve copies.
  • Peter MacNicol He was in the check out line ahead of us at Whole Foods on Greenville Ave. in Dallas.
  • Jared Leto He's in a band (30 Seconds to Mars) and I stood behind him at the buffet at a meet-n-greet.

Actual Contact:
  • Kurt Vonnegut I invited him to a party on campus at New College when he spoke there in the fall of '86. He declined.
  • Roger Staubach He used to come into the sporting goods store I worked at to buy autograph footballs. We'd exchange pleasantries.
  • Don Henley He used to come into the music store where I worked. I was working the register when he came up with a large stack of CDs. I rang them up, and told him the price. As he handed me his credit card, I asked him for his ID out of force of habit. He sighed and dug out his wallet, giving me time to read "Don Henley, Don Henley Productions" on the card. The thing is, if I'd made a big deal of him being Don Henley, he'd have been annoyed.
  • Tweet Met her at a meet-n-greet in a club, and had my picture taken with her (I'll have to see if I have it somewhere).
  • Gary Wiseman (drummer for Bowling For Soup) Their lable had a BBQ party for the local music stores, and my wife and I chatted with him while his band played an acoustic set w/o him.
  • Various Members of Polyphonic Spree My wife's a fan. They're from Dallas. There are 1500 members of the band. It's really easy to meet them.
  • "Weird Al" Yankovic My wife's a fan. He came to Dallas and played the last national touring concert at the Bronco Bowl before they tore it down and replaced it with a Home Depot. We hung around afterward and said hi.
  • Cornmo My wife's a fan (do you see a pattern here?). He's from Dallas. He's a nice guy.

Athletes next to whom I've peed:
  • Jason Kidd When he played for the Maverics, he used to hang out at the same bar I went to occasionally with a friend. We both ended up in urinals next to each other in the men's room.
  • Dale Hellestrae When he was playing for the Cowboys, a friend took me to a game, and afterward we went to a bar that the Cowboys liked to go to, and he and I ended up in urinals next to each other in the men's room.
If I can think of any others, I'll add them later.
