Playing Catch-Up
My entries have been rather hit-n-miss lately. That's why this blog used to be called Updated Randomly. I didn't like that name, though, even if it was accurate.
- I've downloaded/installed and am starting to use Netscape's browser. Years ago, back when I first got a computer, I was a Netscape guy. I couldn't stand Internet Explorer. I hated how it functioned. Netscape Navigator was the bomb, yo diggity. Then they upgraded it and it sucked ass, so I was pretty much forced to switch to IE. At the time I was also looking into Opera, but didn't like how it worked. Then Firefox came out, and I completely switched. The new Netscape browser is based on Firefox, it just looks different.
- Cynthia and I went to eat dinner at Dream Cafe last night. We're going to have to give it another chance, since the food was good, but the service sucked. When we arrived, there was a whole gaggle of kids playing on the lawn, while their parents sipped wine and watched from the patio. Upon entering, we found the inside seating to be completely empty. Even of staff. We waited at the Host station with another couple (who was there first) for a few minutes while staff would look at us, then look away, without ever acknowledging our presence. Finally, Cynthia loudly asked if anyone was available to seat us, or even greet us. A waitress came up and seated us with an attitude that she was unsulted that we would want to be helped. Our waiter was nice enough, and was able to answer all of our questions (Cynthia's gone vegan). She ordered the One For John while I had the Brie and Grilled Onion burger. Hers was good, mine was ok. All in all, I was very unimpressed with the staff, and will need to dine there again to get a better feel for the food. The nice thing about it is that their menu has options for vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores.
- I'm wanting to build up a single-speed bike. I currently have 3 road bikes, a mountian bike, and a hybrid. I want to take one of my road bikes, the Colnago that is still at my ex-gf's house, and convert it. It should be extremely easy to do. All I'll need is a single speed freewheel and a spoke. And I'll have to pick up the bike from Mesquite.
- I skipped my ride today, as it's very windy and it looks like it's gonna rain. I don't mind riding in the rain, but would rather not. And I hate wind. I'm in no kind of shape to be battling the wind right now.
- Cynthia's work hired me to do some contract work (literally) for them. They paid me very decent money to combine some graphics together on about 60-70 different documents, print them out, collate them with 4 other pages, make a copy of each set, and scan the sets to PDF for digital archiving. Total time spent was about 10.5 hours. We're going to use the money to upgrade the RAM and HD on my computer.
- I need to do our taxes later today. We have the software, we just need to do it. We won't be getting any money back, even if we overpaid, because I owe the IRS a huge chunk of change. I need to call Roni Deutch and have her talk some sense into the IRS for me.
- Maybe I will go for a ride this afternoon, after all. I'm feeling bored, and am sure Cynthia would like to get on the computer. Riding would solve both things: it'd give me something to do, and free up the computer for her.
- Last night we walked down to the West End. We saw a guy creating art using spray paint. It was rather entertaining, and interesting to see how detailed he was able to get with standard Krylon spray paint. He created an otherworldly landscape that was kinda cool. I wouldn't want to get one and display it because, a) I don't live in a dorm, and b) I don't get high. On our way home, we stopped off at the Press Box Grill for a beer. As we were about to leave, we ran into Ernesto, the maintenance guy for our loft building. We found out that he is no longer the maintenance guy, and in fact no longer lives in the building or works for the property company. It appears that the company put him on vacation the week of his birthday, during which various residents happened to buy him beers/drinks on his birthday. One of them then complained to management that Ernesto was "too friendly." Ernesto is the most personable man I've ever known. He's friends with everyone, and is always extremely happy. He may be a little touchy-feely, but I attribute that to his cultural upbringing (he's hispanic). I've never felt that he meant anything sexual or untoward by his physical contact with anyone I've seen him interact with. Well, according to him, when he came back to work the next week, he was called into the office, and put on suspension for a week while upper management investigated the situation. Three or four days later, they told him their investigation was complete, and that they'd decided to terminate him, and that he had 4 days to vacate his loft. He asked why they chose to terminate a 14-year employee with stellar performance and voluminous praise from tenants rather than transfer him to another property. They just said they didn't want to transfer him. So he's now unemployed. He's decided not to work in the property maintenance industry again. He has experience as a chef, so that's an option for him. In any event, it sucks. He was one of the reasons we chose this building when we moved late last year. He was the maintenance guy at our old loft building, where we'd lived for 2.5 years. It sounds shitty what management did to him, but I have to remind myself that we only heard his side of the situation, that there are other sides that need to be considered as well. It still sucks, though.
