Music

One of the members of an online car club I belong to posted a question about music: What are some groups, CD's, or songs you'd suggest more people look into or wish more knew of??

I gave my list:
Bic Runga, Common Rotation, Cooly's Hot Box, Frou Frou, Killing Heidi, Naid, OK Go, Peace Orchestra & Quarashi.

He later posted to say that he recently picked up Frou Frou's album and that he liked it. It makes me feel good to know that I've spread the word about a band that I like.

Part of the reason I have such a wide taste in music is, I guess, because I was in band all through school. In 5th grade, when we were asked about what instrument we wanted to play in band (if we wanted to be in band), I decided I wanted to play the cornet. Well, my parent's couldn't afford to either buy or rent a cornet for me, but my grandparents still had my uncle's old Conn trombone, so I was told that if I wanted to be in band, I had to play the trombone. (They rented a trumpet for my younger brother the next year, and he only played for that year.) Anyway, having played trombone for 8 years (5th - 12th grade), and even playing for a couple of years later on in college (I've performed at the Meyerson Symphony Center twice), I gained an appreciation for a wide variety of musical genres.

The only thing that sucks about this, is I have a large CD collection (not as large as some people, but it's still big). Because I never know what type of music I'm in the mood for, it makes it difficult to listen, because I have to pick a CD to put in the player and then I have to listen to all of it, and I might change my mind part way through it, and have to get up and change it. So I'm ripping them to my harddrive (in WMA format, which I know kinda locks me into Windows Media Player, but I like it). I currently have about 6 gigs of music on my computer. I figure it'll take about 15-20 gigs to hold it all.

Another thing that has aided my diverse musical taste is the fact that I've subscribed to CMJ New Music off and on since September 1995. It comes with a CD with about 20 different songs by a variety of artists. I've got about 55 of them. And only about 12 have been ripped. What sucks about it is the fact that Windows Media Player doesn't always read the CD track listings properly, and when they're searched for online, they come up goofy, and I have to type each one in. I'm determined not to stay up as late as I have been, but I want to get it done. I guess I do it a little at a time.
