Common Courtesy
I live in a very secure building. If someone comes to visit me, they have to be buzzed into the lobby, and they then have 20 seconds to hit the 'up' button on the elevator to get out of the lobby. If they don't hit it in time, they're trapped there until someone comes down, or they decide to leave. The other day when I was coming home from work, I used my keyfob to unlock the lobby door, and I saw a woman just sorta hanging around in the lobby. She was dressed in a nice sweatsuit, and looked like she was either going to work out, had just been working out, or was just lounging around. I went to the mail boxes and picked up my mail (nothing but junk). She was still just kinda hovering around the elevator door, as if she were waiting for me to use my fob to activate it. After I got my mail, I headed past the elevator towards the stairs (since I live on the 2nd floor, I see no point in using the elevator). She followed me until she saw me pass the elevator. She never spoke to me, so I'm only guessing that she wanted me to activate the elevator for her. Since all the residents have keyfobs to activate the elevators and other access doors, I figured she didn't belong here. I also had never seen her before. If she had simply said "hi" and asked me to unlock the elevator for her, I'd have probably done it (she was kinda cute). She also could have followed me up the stairs to the 2nd floor and called the elevator from there, since it's only electronically locked in the lobby. I guess walking up two flights (there's a mezzanine) of stairs was just too much for her. A little friendliness would have helped, too.
